Jerusalem, known in Arabic as Al-Quds, is the third holiest city in Islam. It was the first "Qibla" (direction of prayer) for Muslims before it was changed to Mecca. The city is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, located on the Haram al-Sharif. It is the site of the Isra' and Mi'raj, the miraculous night journey of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to the heavens. Throughout history, Jerusalem has been a symbol of religious significance, a centre for prophets, and a focal point for Islamic spirituality and history. Jerusalem (Al-Quds) holds deep significance in Islam. It was the first Qibla,the direction Muslims faced in prayer,for approximately 16-17 months after the Hijrah, before the Qibla was changed to Mecca. This period established the city's importance in Islamic practice. The city is the site of the Isra and Mi'raj, the Prophet's night journey. He was transported from Mecca to Jerusalem, where he led all the prophets in prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque, then ascended to the heavens. This event is mentioned in the Quran: "Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa" (17:1). Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest mosque in Islam, after the Sacred Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. The Prophet said that journeys should only be undertaken to these three mosques. The Dome of the Rock, built in 691 CE, is one of the earliest and most magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. It marks the site from which the Prophet is believed to have ascended. Jerusalem has been a center of Islamic learning and spirituality for over 1,400 years. It has been a symbol of the connection between the Abrahamic faiths, a place where prophets prayed, and a focal point for Muslim identity. Throughout history, Muslims have protected and maintained Jerusalem. Saladin's liberation of the city from the Crusaders in 1187 is remembered as a great moment in Islamic history. In modern times, Jerusalem remains a deeply significant and sensitive city. Its status is a central issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Muslims worldwide continue to advocate for its protection and for Muslim access to its holy sites. Jerusalem reminds of the connection between the prophets, the continuity of divine revelation, and the importance of protecting holy sites. It calls Muslims to honor the legacy of the prophets, to stand for justice, and to cherish the city that was the first Qibla and the site of the Prophet's miraculous journey.
