The Qibla is the "Direction" toward which Muslims face during their five daily prayers. This direction is the Ka'ba in Mecca. Originally, the Qibla was Jerusalem, but it was changed by Divine command during the Prophet's time in Medina. The Qibla is a powerful symbol of the unity (Tawheed) of the Ummah,no matter where a Muslim is on the planet, they are facing the same focal point, creating a global circle of worship centered on the first house of Monotheism. The change of Qibla from Jerusalem to Mecca occurred approximately 16-17 months after the Hijrah, as commanded in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:144). This event was a significant test of faith for the early Muslims, distinguishing those who truly followed the Prophet from those who wavered. The Kaaba, located within the Masjid al-Haram, is considered the first house of worship established for humanity, built by Prophet Ibrahim and his son Isma'il. Muslims are required to face the Qibla with certainty when possible; if uncertain, they may rely on their best judgment. In situations of travel, illness, or danger, the obligation is flexible, one can pray in any direction if unable to determine the Qibla. In congregational prayer, the Imam stands at the front, and the rows form behind him, all facing the same direction. Mosques worldwide are constructed with a Mihrab (niche) indicating the Qibla direction. The Qibla unifies Muslims across continents, languages, and cultures in a single, shared orientation of worship.
