Alayhis Salam

عليه السلام
Text Size:
Alayhis Salam (Peace be upon him) is the singular honorific and "Dua" used when mentioning a Prophet or an Angel, such as Isa (AS), Musa (AS), or Jibril (AS). It reflects the "Mu'min's" belief in the sanctity of these figures. For the "Ummah," using this phrase is part of the "Adab" (etiquette) of "Ilm" (knowledge). It acknowledges the "Sabr" (patience) and sacrifice these figures endured to bring the message of "Haqq" (truth) to humanity, fostering a heart of gratitude and reverence for Allah's messengers. Alayhis Salam is used for all prophets (over 124,000 mentioned in tradition) and the archangels. The Quran commands believers to honor the prophets and to make no distinction between them in faith (2:285). For the Prophet Muhammad, the more complete Salawat (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is used, while for other prophets, Alayhis Salam is the standard honorific. This distinction reflects the unique status of Muhammad as the final and seal of the prophets. When mentioning Prophet Isa (Jesus), Muslims say Alayhis Salam, affirming belief in his prophethood while rejecting claims of his divinity or crucifixion. For Prophet Musa (Moses), Alayhis Salam honors the messenger who received the Torah and led the Children of Israel. The phrase serves multiple purposes: it is a supplication for peace upon the prophets, a declaration of belief in their messages, a rejection of any disrespect or false claims about them, and a reminder of the unity of prophetic tradition. Saying Alayhis Salam cultivates reverence for all of Allah's messengers and connects the believer to the chain of revelation that culminated in Islam. It is a simple but profound act of faith that acknowledges the continuity of divine guidance throughout human history.
