Du'a Laylat al-Qadr is the special supplication for the "Night of Power" during the last ten nights of Ramadan. When Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet (PBUH) what she should say if she knew which night was Laylat al-Qadr, he taught her the famous prayer: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni" (O Allah, You are the Forgiving, You love forgiveness, so forgive me). This concise yet profound Dua captures the essence of the night, seeking divine pardon and a fresh start. It is a moment of deep vulnerability and hope, where the believer acknowledges their shortcomings and pleads for the infinite mercy of the Creator. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught this supplication to Aisha (RA) when she asked what to say on Laylat al-Qadr. He said: "Say: O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me" (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah). This du'a is short but comprehensive. It acknowledges Allah's attribute of forgiveness (al-'Afuww) and asks for His pardon. The word 'afuww is related to effacing, blotting out, and erasing. The believer asks Allah to erase their sins completely. The du'a also recognizes that Allah loves forgiveness. He is not only forgiving but also loves to forgive. This gives the believer hope and encourages them to seek forgiveness with confidence. For believers, this du'a is recited frequently during the last ten nights, especially on the odd nights when Laylat al-Qadr is likely to fall. They recite it with sincerity, seeking Allah's pardon for all their sins, major and minor. The du'a can be recited at any time, but it is especially recommended during Laylat al-Qadr. The Prophet said that whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and seeking reward will have their previous sins forgiven (Bukhari). The du'a complements the prayer, asking for the forgiveness that the night promises. For believers, this du'a is a means of drawing close to Allah. They acknowledge their sins and their need for His forgiveness. They trust in His mercy and hope for His pardon. They also reflect on the meaning of the du'a, recognizing that Allah is 'Afuww,He not only forgives but also erases the consequences of sin. He loves to forgive, so the believer approaches Him with confidence. The du'a also teaches that forgiveness is the ultimate goal of Laylat al-Qadr. The night is better than a thousand months, but its greatest blessing is forgiveness. The believer seeks that forgiveness, knowing that it brings freedom from the Fire and the hope of Paradise. The believer recites this du'a with presence of heart, asking Allah to forgive them, their family, and the entire Ummah. They hope that on this blessed night, their prayers will be accepted and their sins forgiven.
