Maturidi School

The Maturidi School, or Al-Maturidiyyah, is one of the two primary schools of orthodox Sunni theology (Kalam), founded by the great scholar Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d. 944 CE) in Samarkand. It emphasizes the harmony between "Aql" (reason) and "Naql" (revelation), arguing that the human intellect is capable of recognizing the existence of God and the fundamental differences between good and evil through observation of the natural world, even without the direct intervention of revelation. However, it maintains that revelation is necessary to understand the specific laws of the Shariah and the details of the afterlife. The Maturidi school is the predominant theological framework for the majority of Hanafi Muslims worldwide, particularly in Central Asia, Turkey, the Balkans, and South Asia.
Theologically, the Maturidi School is known for its balanced positions on complex metaphysical issues, such as "Qadr" (Divine Decree) and "Irada" (Human Will). It posits the concept of "Ikhtiyar" (choice), where Allah creates the actions but the human being "acquires" them through their intention and will, making them morally accountable. This avoids the extremes of absolute determinism (Jabriyyah) and absolute free will (Qadariyyah). The school also affirms the Attributes of Allah without likening Him to His creation (Tashbih) and without denying their reality (Ta’til). It emphasizes that Allah’s wisdom (Hikmah) is inherent in all His actions, and that every command of the Shariah has a rational basis that serves the benefit of humanity. This intellectual rigor helped the Ummah defend the faith against philosophical challenges and provided a stable foundation for the development of Islamic law.
