Maytah

ميتة
Text Size:
Maytah refers to "Carrion" or the meat of an animal that has died of natural causes, illness, or through an improper method of slaughter. Consuming Maytah is strictly prohibited in Islam for health and ritual reasons, as the blood (which contains toxins) remains in the body. The only exceptions are fish and locusts, which are considered Halal even if found dead. This ruling reinforces the concept of "Tayyib" (purity), ensuring that Muslims consume only that which is wholesome and hygienically slaughtered. The Quran explicitly prohibits maytah: "Prohibited to you are dead animals (al-maytah), blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah" (5:3). This prohibition is clear and absolute. Maytah is haram because the animal did not die through proper Islamic slaughter (dhabh). In proper slaughter, the blood is drained, the name of Allah is mentioned, and the animal dies quickly with minimal suffering. In maytah, the blood remains in the body, making it impure and potentially harmful. The exceptions are fish and locusts. The Prophet said: "Two dead things are made lawful for us: fish and locusts" (Ibn Majah). For fish, any method of death is permissible, including finding them dead on the shore. For locusts, they are permissible whether killed or found dead. Maytah also includes animals that die by strangulation, beating, falling, goring, or being eaten by wild animals, unless slaughtered before death. The Quran lists these specifically: "Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death]" (5:3). For believers, maytah is to be avoided. They only consume meat from animals properly slaughtered. They trust that Allah's prohibitions are for their benefit, protecting their physical and spiritual health. The ultimate goal is to consume what is halal and tayyib, seeking Allah's pleasure and avoiding what He has forbidden.
