Bay'At Al-Ridwan (Pledge Of Ridwan/Pledge Of The Tree)

بيعة الرضوان
Text Size:
Bay'at al-Ridwan, or the "Pledge of Divine Pleasure," refers to the historic and monumentally significant oath of loyalty given by approximately 1,400 companions to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 628 CE at Hudaybiyyah. Performed under a tree following the rumor of the martyrdom of Uthman (RA), this pledge represents the peak of spiritual courage, self-sacrifice, and the Nur (light) of a faith that prioritized the unity and the defense of the mission above all else. In response, Allah (SWT) revealed the verse of "Ridwan," declaring: "Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree" (Surah Al-Fath 48:18), providing the Ummah with a state of Sakina (tranquility) and a definitive Hujjah (proof) of the high status of the Sahaba. The Pledge of Ridwan took place during the expedition to Hudaybiyyah. When Uthman ibn Affan (RA) was sent to negotiate with the Quraysh, news spread that he had been killed. The Prophet gathered the companions under a tree and asked them to pledge to fight to the death rather than retreat. All 1,400 companions pledged, swearing by Allah. The pledge demonstrated their absolute loyalty. They were willing to die for the Prophet and the cause of Islam. When it became known that Uthman was alive, the pledge was still considered valid as an oath of loyalty. Allah revealed: "Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest" (48:18). The pledge was a test of faith. The companions passed, showing their willingness to sacrifice everything. The Prophet was pleased, and Allah was pleased with them. The pledge established the loyalty of the companions and strengthened their resolve. For believers, Bay'at al-Ridwan is a reminder of the loyalty required of believers. The companions pledged their lives; the believer pledges their heart. It also shows the high status of the companions,Allah declared His pleasure with them. The believer honors the companions, follows their example, and seeks to be among those with whom Allah is pleased. The ultimate pleasure is Allah's pleasure, and the believer strives to attain it through faith, loyalty, and sacrifice.
