Sami Allahu Liman Hamidah

سمع الله لمن حمده
Text Size:
Sami Allahu Liman Hamidah is the phrase the Imam (or individual) says while rising from the Ruku, meaning "Allah hears the one who praises Him." It is a powerful reminder that Allah is "As-Sami" (The All-Hearing) and is intimately aware of every word of gratitude uttered by His servants. This phrase acts as a bridge to the response "Rabbana Wa Lakal Hamd." It reinforces the believer's confidence that their prayers and praises are not in vain but are received and acknowledged by the Lord of the worlds, fostering a sense of divine proximity. The phrase is recited when rising from bowing in prayer. The Prophet said that when the Imam says "Sami'allahu liman hamidah," the congregation should respond with "Rabbana wa lakal hamd," and that the angels respond as well. This creates a moment where human voices, angelic voices, and divine acceptance converge. The phrase uses "Sami'a" (hears) to emphasize Allah's attribute of hearing. But this is not mere auditory hearing; it is hearing that encompasses knowledge, acceptance, and response. When Allah "hears" praise, He responds with mercy, reward, and blessing. The Prophet taught that the one who praises Allah is responded to by Allah directly. This phrase is also a declaration of Tawhid in gratitude. It affirms that Allah alone hears and responds to praise, unlike false gods that are deaf to the calls of their worshipers. For the believer, saying "Sami'allahu liman hamidah" is a moment of connection. In that transition from bowing to standing, the worshipper declares that their praise has been heard. This brings comfort and confidence, knowing that nothing said in praise of Allah is wasted. The phrase also serves as a reminder that Allah is always listening. In daily life, outside of prayer, knowing that Allah hears every praise, every gratitude, and every prayer encourages constant remembrance. In times of hardship, this attribute brings hope,if Allah hears, He can respond. In times of ease, it brings gratitude,if Allah hears praise, He multiplies blessings. Sami'allahu liman hamidah thus becomes more than a prayer phrase; it is a declaration of a fundamental truth about the relationship between the Creator and His servants: He is always listening, always near, and always responsive to those who turn to Him in gratitude and praise.
