The Sunnah (Path/Way) refers to the entire "life-example" of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),his sayings (Hadith), his actions, and his silent approvals. While the Quran provides the "Principles," the Sunnah provides the "Practice." Following the Sunnah is a Divine command: "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger" (4:59). It covers everything from how to pray and fast to how to eat, sleep, and treat neighbors. For a Muslim, the Sunnah is the "Living Quran," showing how to implement the Divine message in the context of daily life. It provides a standardized model of excellence that unites the Ummah across time and space, ensuring that the religion remains authentic to its original spirit. The Sunnah is preserved through two primary means: the written record of Hadith and the continuous practice of the Muslim community across generations. Scholars emphasize that the Sunnah is not merely optional but obligatory to follow, as the Prophet said: "I have left among you two things; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah" (Malik). The Sunnah encompasses the Prophet's worship, character, dealings, and even his preferences in daily matters. Following the Sunnah is an expression of love for the Prophet, as the Quran commands: "Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins'" (3:31). For believers, the Sunnah is the practical guide to attaining Allah's pleasure, perfecting character, and living a life of purpose, balance, and devotion. It transforms abstract principles into concrete actions, making Islam a living, breathing reality in the life of every believer.
