Tawheed is the "Oneness of Allah",the foundational core of Islam. It is categorized into three parts: 1. Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship),the belief that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of all that exists. 2. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship),the belief that Allah alone deserves all acts of worship, such as prayer, supplication, and sacrifice. 3. Tawheed al-Asma wa as-Sifat (Oneness of His Names and Attributes),the belief that Allah's names and attributes are unique and incomparable, and that they should be affirmed as He has affirmed them without distortion or denial. Tawheed is not just a theological concept; it is a way of life that frees the human soul from the slavery of "multiple masters" (money, status, people) and connects it to the single, eternal Source of all power. The opposite of Tawheed is shirk (associating partners with Allah), which is the greatest sin in Islam. The Quran warns that Allah will not forgive shirk if one dies upon it. Tawheed is the message of all prophets, from Adam to Muhammad, peace be upon them all. The purpose of creation is to worship Allah alone, and Tawheed is the foundation of that worship. Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah is affirmed by all humans instinctively, but Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah is the test: will one direct worship to the Creator alone or will they associate others with Him? The testimony of faith, "La ilaha illallah," is the declaration of Tawheed, negating all false gods and affirming Allah alone. Tawheed transforms life. It frees from fear of anyone other than Allah, from seeking approval from anyone other than Allah, and from despair because the One who controls all outcomes is the One who is worshipped. It gives purpose, direction, and meaning. In a world of multiple allegiances and conflicting loyalties, Tawheed calls to single-minded devotion to the Creator. It is the foundation of Islamic identity and the source of true freedom, freedom from servitude to anything other than Allah.
