Salat al-Kusuf (and Khusuf) is the prayer performed during a solar or lunar eclipse. In Islam, eclipses are not viewed as omens of bad luck or the birth/death of a person, but as "two of the signs of Allah" that should inspire awe and remembrance. This prayer is unique in its structure, involving two Rakahs, each with two bowings (Ruku) and two long recitations. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that when such events occur, Muslims should hasten to prayer, give charity, and seek forgiveness. It serves to redirect the human heart from the spectacle of the natural world back to the Creator of the celestial bodies, reinforcing the concept of Tawheed (Monotheism). The solar eclipse prayer (kusuf) is performed during a solar eclipse, which in the Prophet's time caused people to fear that it was a sign of the end of times. The Prophet immediately went to the mosque, led the congregation in an unusually long prayer, and then explained that the sun and moon are signs of Allah, not affected by human events. The prayer consists of two rak'ah, each with two standing recitations (each longer than normal) and two bowings (ruku') before the two prostrations (sujud). This extended prayer allows time for deep reflection on Allah's power. After the prayer, the imam delivers a sermon reminding the congregation to remember Allah, seek forgiveness, give charity, and prepare for the Hereafter. The eclipse prayer is sunnah mu'akkadah (emphasized sunnah) and can be performed individually or in congregation. It demonstrates that in Islam, even celestial events become opportunities for worship and reflection. The prayer corrects superstitious beliefs by providing a religious response that focuses on Allah's majesty rather than worldly fears. For the believer, the eclipse prayer is a reminder of the Day of Judgment, when the sun and moon will be folded up. It cultivates humility, awe, and gratitude for the regularity of the natural order that Allah sustains. Even in the modern age of scientific understanding, the eclipse prayer remains a spiritual practice connecting cosmic phenomena to divine worship.
