Wa Alaikum Assalam

وعليكم السلام
Text Size:
Wa Alaikum Assalam is the mandatory response to the Islamic greeting "Assalamu Alaikum." It means "And upon you be peace." Islam teaches that when someone offers a greeting, the recipient should respond with one that is either equal to it or better. This exchange is more than a social pleasantry; it is a "Du'a" (supplication) for the safety and well-being of the other person. It breaks down barriers of pride and fosters a sense of security and brotherhood within the community, reinforcing the idea that every Muslim is a source of peace for others. The Quran instructs: "When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or at least return it equally" (4:86). Responding with "Wa Alaikum Assalam" fulfills the equal return, while responding with "Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah" is better, and "Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh" is even better. The response is obligatory immediately upon hearing the greeting. The Salam exchange is not merely a formality but a mutual prayer for peace and protection. It creates a cycle of goodwill, one initiates with a prayer for peace, the other returns it, and both share in the blessing. The Prophet emphasized that returning the greeting is among the rights of a Muslim over another. In congregational settings, it is sufficient that one person responds on behalf of the group, though responding individually is better. The practice of responding to Salam cultivates humility, as it requires setting aside ego to acknowledge and reciprocate the good wishes of others. It also instills a sense of responsibility, every Muslim is a guardian of peace for their brothers and sisters, and the Salam exchange is the first step in fulfilling that role. This simple exchange, repeated countless times daily across the Muslim world, weaves a fabric of mutual care, reminding believers that they are all interconnected and that the peace of each is the concern of all.
