Witr prayer is a highly emphasized (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) voluntary prayer performed after the Isha (night) prayer and before the dawn of Fajr. Its name derives from the Arabic word for "odd," as it consists of an odd number of rak'at,typically one, three, five, seven, nine, or eleven, with three being most common. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is Witr (One) and loves the Witr, so observe Witr prayer, O people of the Quran" (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi). He never abandoned Witr, whether traveling or at home. The Witr prayer is often considered the seal of one's night prayer, and the Prophet recommended making it the last prayer of the night. However, if one fears not waking for Tahajjud, Witr may be prayed before sleeping. In the Hanafi school, Witr is considered obligatory (Wajib) and consists of three rak'at with a special supplication (Du'a al-Qunut) recited in the final rak'ah after bowing. Other schools consider it strongly recommended but not obligatory. The Du'a al-Qunut, taught by the Prophet to his grandson Hasan, includes profound supplications for guidance, forgiveness, and protection. The Prophet would recite: "O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, pardon me among those You have pardoned, take care of me among those You have taken care of..." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi). Witr can be prayed in various ways: three rak'at with one taslim (salam) at the end; three rak'at with taslim after the first two rak'at and then a single rak'ah; or a single rak'ah prayed separately. The preferred method is to pray two rak'at and then a single rak'ah, making the total odd. Witr prayer represents the believer's intimate nightly conversation with Allah, seeking His guidance, mercy, and protection before resting. It is a time of deep devotion, when the world is quiet and the heart can focus entirely on the Creator. For believers, Witr is a cherished Sunnah that completes the night prayer and ensures that the last act before sleep is the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet said: "Whoever fears that he will not wake up at the end of the night should pray Witr at the beginning; and whoever hopes to wake up at the end of the night should pray Witr at the end, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by angels)" (Muslim).
