Prophet Zakariyya (Zechariah, peace be upon him) was a righteous prophet sent to the Children of Israel, known for his unwavering faith and heartfelt supplications. He was the guardian of Maryam (Mary), mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus), and maintained the temple in Jerusalem. The Quran highlights Zakariyya's story primarily in Surah Maryam and Surah Al-Imran as a powerful example of sincere prayer and divine response despite apparent impossibility. When Zakariyya saw Allah providing Maryam with out-of-season fruits, he realized Allah's power transcends natural laws. Despite his old age and his wife's barrenness, he fervently prayed for a righteous child to continue the prophetic legacy: "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white hair, and I have never been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy" (19:4). Allah answered his prayer, granting him Yahya (John the Baptist) as a miracle-a righteous son who would confirm Allah's word. The Quran instructs: "So Zakariyya invoked his Lord, saying, 'My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication'" (3:38). Zakariyya's story teaches that sincere supplication (du'a) can overcome all obstacles, that hope in Allah's mercy should never cease, and that spiritual legacy matters more than worldly lineage. His life exemplifies the power of turning to Allah alone, especially in moments of deepest need.
