Sheikh al-Islam Zakariya al-Ansari (823-926 AH / 1420-1520 CE) was one of the most distinguished scholars of the late Mamluk era, a prolific author, and the leading authority on Shafi'i jurisprudence of his time. Born in the Egyptian village of Sunaykah, he studied at Al-Azhar and became renowned for his mastery of multiple Islamic sciences, including Quranic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith, jurisprudence (fiqh), principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), theology (kalam), Arabic language, and Sufism. He held the prestigious position of Shaykh al-Islam in Cairo and served as chief judge (qadi al-qudat) of the Shafi'i school. His scholarly output was extraordinary-his works include "Fath al-Wahhab" and "Sharh al-Bahjah al-Wardiyyah" (commentaries on Shafi'i fiqh), "Asna al-Matalib" (another fiqh commentary), "Tuhfat al-Tullab" (a primer on usul al-fiqh), "Fath al-Rahman" (tafsir), and commentaries on al-Baydawi's theology and al-Jazari's Tajwid. His students included the great scholars Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti and Shihab al-Din al-Ramli. Sheikh Zakariya's works are characterized by clarity, comprehensiveness, and balanced methodology, making them enduring references in Shafi'i circles. He lived an exceptionally long life, continuing to teach and write until his death at approximately 103 years of age. His legacy represents the height of Islamic scholarship in the Mamluk period, preserving and transmitting classical knowledge while advancing its systematic presentation.
