Al-Khwarizmi’S Geography

Al-Khwarizmi’S Geography, specifically his seminal work "Kitab Surat al-Ard" (The Book of the Image of the Earth) written in the 9th century, is a cornerstone of medieval geographical and cartographic science. In this work, the father of Algebra corrected and expanded upon the ancient "Geography" of Ptolemy, providing precise coordinates for thousands of locations across the known world. He led a team of seventy geographers under the patronage of the Caliph Al-Ma’mun to measure the circumference of the earth and to create a world map that reflected the latest observational "Ilm" (knowledge). This work established the "Mizan" (balance) and the accuracy needed for global navigation, trade, and the determination of the "Qibla."
Theologically, the pursuit of geography by Al-Khwarizmi was an act of "Tafakkur" (contemplation) and "Ubudiyyah" (servitude). It was based on the Quranic command to "travel the earth" and to observe the "Ayat" (signs) of Allah (SWT) in the diversity of climates and lands. Muslim geographers viewed the earth as a "mirror" of the Creator’s power and "Hikmah" (wisdom). The study of the earth’s image was seen as a means of attaining "Basirah" (spiritual insight) and "Yaqin" (certainty) in the wisdom of the Divine design.
