Islih bayn al-Nas means "Reconciliation between People" and is a highly encouraged practice in Islam. The Quran states that believers are brothers and urges the community to make peace between conflicting parties. Islih involves a neutral third party mediating disputes related to family, business, or social issues. Islam even permits slight deviations from the absolute literal truth if it leads to the restoration of harmony. This practice aims to maintain social cohesion, prevent long-standing feuds, and build a society rooted in mercy, forgiveness, and mutual respect. The Quran commands: "The believers are but brothers, so make reconciliation (islah) between your brothers" (49:10). This verse establishes reconciliation as a religious obligation, not merely a social recommendation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Reconciling between people is better than voluntary prayer, fasting, and charity" (Abu Dawud). This emphasizes the immense reward for those who make peace. Islih can be between individuals, families, or groups. It may involve mediating disputes, facilitating apologies, or helping parties find common ground. The goal is to restore relationships and heal wounds. Islam permits certain concessions in reconciliation. For example, one may say something that is not strictly true to bring about peace, as long as it does not harm others. The Prophet said: "He is not a liar who reconciles between people, saying good things or conveying good things" (Bukhari, Muslim). Islih requires wisdom, patience, and impartiality. The mediator must listen to both sides, understand their concerns, and help them find a solution that is fair and acceptable. The mediator should not take sides but should seek what is best for the community. For believers, islih is a duty. When they see conflict, they do not remain silent but work to bring about reconciliation. They do not spread gossip or take sides in ways that deepen division. They are peacemakers, following the example of the Prophet, who reconciled many conflicts. The ultimate reconciliation is between the believer and Allah through repentance, and between people through forgiveness. The believer strives to be a source of peace, bringing people together and healing divisions. They know that Allah loves those who make peace, and that the reward for reconciliation is great in this life and the next.
