Dua al-Hidayah is a general category of supplications focused on seeking "Hidayah" or divine guidance from Allah. While the most famous form is found in the opening chapter of the Quran (Surah Al-Fatihah) with the phrase "Guide us to the straight path," Muslims are encouraged to ask for guidance in all specific matters of life. It reflects the humble acknowledgment that human intellect alone is insufficient to navigate the complexities of morality and truth without the light provided by the Creator. Seeking Hidayah is a continuous process of aligning one's heart and actions with the Divine Will. The most comprehensive supplication for guidance is in Surah Al-Fatihah: "Ihdina al-sirata al-mustaqim" (Guide us to the straight path) (1:6). This is recited in every rak'ah of prayer, at least 17 times daily. It is a constant plea for guidance. The Prophet taught specific supplications for guidance, such as the Istikhara prayer for specific decisions. He also taught: "O Allah, show me the truth as truth and grant me to follow it, and show me falsehood as falsehood and grant me to avoid it" (Ahmad). Seeking guidance is a sign of humility. It acknowledges that humans do not know everything and need Allah's direction. The one who seeks guidance will be guided. The Quran says: "And those who strive for Us,We will surely guide them to Our ways" (29:69). Guidance is from Allah alone. The Prophet could not guide those whom Allah did not guide. But the believer asks, and Allah responds. For believers, Dua al-Hidayah is a daily necessity. They ask for guidance in every prayer, in every decision, in every moment. They know that without Allah's guidance, they are lost. With it, they find the straight path. They seek guidance to the truth, to right action, and to Paradise. The ultimate guidance is to be guided to Allah, and the believer never stops seeking it.
