Madd Al-Arid

Madd al-'Arid (The Incidental Prolongation) is a rule of Tajweed (Quranic recitation) that applies when a natural madd (prolongation) letter is followed by a letter that is temporarily made sakin (silent) due to stopping (waqf). In this case, the vowel is prolonged for two, four, or six counts depending on the reciter.
