Mufassir

مفسر
Text Size:
A Mufassir is a scholar who specialises in "Tafsir" (the exegesis or interpretation of the Quran). Becoming a Mufassir requires mastery of numerous disciplines, including classical Arabic, grammar, Hadith, history, and the "Reasons for Revelation" (Asbab al-Nuzul). Famous Mufassirun like Ibn Kathir or Al-Tabari have provided the Ummah with the intellectual keys to unlock the deeper meanings of the Divine word, ensuring that the Quran is understood in its proper context and applied correctly to new situations.

The mufassir (Quran commentator) engages in one of the most critical scholarly endeavors in Islam, explaining the meaning of Allah's words to humanity. The qualifications for tafsir are extensive: the mufassir must have deep knowledge of classical Arabic, including grammar, vocabulary, rhetoric, and poetry, as the Quran was revealed in the most eloquent Arabic. They must understand the Quran itself, as the best tafsir is the Quran explaining the Quran. They must know the Hadith, as the Prophet explained the Quran through his words and actions.

They must understand the context of revelation (asbab al-nuzul), the historical circumstances that clarify why verses were revealed. They must know the abrogating and abrogated verses (nasikh wa mansukh), the legal rulings derived from verses, and the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. The mufassir must also be grounded in the principles of faith ('aqidah), ensuring that interpretation does not deviate from orthodox belief.

The mufassir's work is vital for the Ummah. The Quran is the primary source of guidance, but its meanings are deep and require expertise to access. A qualified mufassir helps believers understand what Allah is saying, how it applies to their lives, and how to derive guidance from the divine text. The mufassir ensures that the Quran remains a living, relevant source of guidance for every generation. The role of mufassir carries immense responsibility. The Prophet said: "Whoever speaks about the Quran without knowledge, let him take his seat in the Fire" (Tirmidhi). This warning emphasizes that tafsir is for qualified scholars who approach the divine text with reverence, knowledge, and integrity.
