Qiyam (Standing) has two primary meanings in Islam: (1) In the context of Salah (prayer), Qiyam refers to the standing posture during which the Quran is recited, representing the believer's humble standing before their Creator. (2) "Qiyam al-Layl" (the Night Prayer) is a voluntary act of worship performed after Isha and before Fajr, involving long periods of standing, recitation, and prostration. It is considered one of the highest signs of devotion and spiritual strength. In the context of Ramadan, Qiyam is often synonymous with "Tarawih" prayers. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Whoever stands (Qiyam) in prayer during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." The standing posture in prayer is the foundation of salah,it is where the believer recites the Quran, glorifies Allah, and makes supplication. It symbolizes standing before the Creator in humility and hope. The physical posture of standing reflects the dignity of the human being as the servant of Allah. In night prayer (qiyam al-layl), the standing is prolonged, often for hours, as the believer seeks intimacy with Allah in the quiet of the night. The Quran commands: "And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station" (17:79). The Prophet's night prayer was so lengthy that his feet would swell, and when asked why he exerted himself despite being forgiven, he replied: "Should I not be a grateful servant?" (Bukhari, Muslim). Qiyam al-layl is particularly recommended in the last third of the night, when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks, "Who is asking of Me, that I may give him?" (Bukhari, Muslim). The practice of qiyam cultivates discipline, sincerity, and the ability to disconnect from worldly concerns for extended communion with Allah. It is a sign of true faith and a means of drawing close to the Creator. In Ramadan, qiyam is a communal act, with mosques filled with worshippers standing in prayer together, creating an atmosphere of collective devotion. The spiritual benefits of qiyam include: forgiveness of sins, increased khushu' (focus) in prayer, development of patience, and the reward of being among the sincere servants of Allah.
