Salat al-Khusuf is a special congregational prayer performed during a lunar eclipse, following the established Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Unlike solar eclipse prayer (Salat al-Kusuf), which is performed audibly, lunar eclipse prayer may be performed silently, though both follow similar structure. The prayer consists of two rak'at, each containing two bowings (ruku') and two standings (qiyam),longer than regular prayers. After the prayer, the imam delivers a sermon reminding the congregation of Allah's power, encouraging repentance, charity, and remembrance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained that eclipses are not caused by anyone's death or birth but are signs of Allah's power, saying: "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life. So when you see them, hasten to remember Allah and to prayer" (Bukhari and Muslim). On one occasion, when his son Ibrahim died on an eclipse day, the Prophet clarified this explicitly to prevent superstitious beliefs. Salat al-Khusuf emphasizes that natural phenomena should direct believers toward their Creator, not toward superstition. The prayer is sunnah mu'akkadah (emphasized) for Muslims in community, reflecting Islam's integration of cosmic events with spiritual awareness. The extended prayer (each rak'ah has two bowings) allows prolonged reflection on Allah's power and one's own vulnerability. The sermon following the prayer further reinforces the lesson, eclipses are reminders of the Day of Judgment, when the sun and moon will be folded up (81:1). The prayer for lunar eclipses also demonstrates that Islamic worship encompasses all of creation, even celestial events become occasions for remembering Allah. For believers, observing the eclipse prayer connects them to the Prophet's practice and transforms a potentially frightening natural event into a moment of spiritual focus. The prayer encourages humility, reminding that the vast cosmic order is under Allah's command and that humans are small before their Creator. Salat al-Khusuf is still observed in many Muslim communities, preserving this prophetic practice and maintaining awareness of Allah's signs in the heavens.
