حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
Text Size:
The Dua for Anxiety (Hasbunallah wa ni'mal-wakil) refers to the historic and foundational act of spiritual Tawakkul (trust) used by the Prophets and the righteous in the face of overwhelming fear or distress. Rooted in the Quranic description of the companions at the Battle of Uhud (Surah Ali ‘Imran 3:173), this concept represents the peak of spiritual resilience and the Nur (light) of a faith that finds its ultimate Sakina (tranquility) in Divine sufficiency. The phrase "Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal-wakil" (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs) is a definitive Hujjah (proof) of the believer’s strength through their dependence on the Creator, ensuring that the heart remains unshakeable in the face of the trials (Fitna) of the Dunya (world).

Theologically, the use of the "Hasbunallah" formula is a manifestation of the principle of Tawhid (oneness) and the Hikmah (wisdom) of Divine law in providing a refuge for the human psyche. It reflects the Nur of a faith that views the challenges of life as a means of strengthening the soul’s connection with the Truth. The Prophet Ibrahim (AS) famously uttered these words as he was thrown into the fire, serving as a Burhan (proof) of the transformative and liberating power of absolute trust in God. This history reflects the Mizan (balance) between human effort and Divine decree. Historically, the regular practice of this supplication has provided the Ummah with the spiritual focus and the discipline needed to build diverse and flourishing civilizations based on the rule of law and the defense of justice. It underscores the absolute Amanah (trust) of the believer to guard their mind from the "rust" of anxiety and to find their peace in the sufficiency of their Lord for the benefit of all humanity.

For the modern Ummah, the "Hasbunallah" prayer is a source of immense spiritual power and a roadmap for contemporary psychological well-being. It teaches the believers the value of humility, the beauty of Divine dependency, and the importance of remaining steadfast in the face of global and personal uncertainty. In a modern world often characterized by stress and the erosion of internal stability, the tradition of this Dua provides a roadmap for internal peace and social integrity. It encourages a culture of Ihsan (excellence) and communal responsibility. By honoring the Quranic description of the faithful, the Muslim community strengthens its identity and its commitment to the path of guidance. It promotes a life of purpose and shared spiritual prosperity, ensuring that the light of Divine sufficiency continue to guide the human condition toward ultimate success and the pleasure of Allah.
