La Ilaha Illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah

لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله
Text Size:
La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah is the "Kalimah Shahada," the testimony of faith that enters a person into the fold of Islam. It means "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The first part establishes "Tawhid" (the oneness of God), while the second part establishes the "Risalah" (prophethood). This phrase is the foundation of the Islamic creed, recited in the Adhan, in daily prayers, and ideally as the last words of a believer. It is the core truth that shapes every aspect of a Muslim's worldview and actions. The Shahada is the key to Paradise, as the Prophet taught that whoever sincerely testifies to it will enter Paradise. The testimony must be uttered with full conviction and understanding. The first part, La ilaha illallah, negates all false gods and affirms Allah alone as worthy of worship. This requires rejecting anything that is worshipped besides Allah, whether physical idols, desires, status, wealth, or the ego. The second part, Muhammadur Rasulullah, affirms that Muhammad is Allah's final messenger, requiring belief in everything he conveyed and following his example. The Shahada is more than a statement; it is a covenant. When one testifies to it, they commit to living by its implications, worshipping Allah alone according to the guidance of His Prophet. This includes the five pillars of Islam and all other obligations. The Shahada is also a declaration of identity. It distinguishes Muslims from others and unites them across all differences of culture, language, and ethnicity. When someone accepts Islam, they recite the Shahada before witnesses, entering the Ummah as a full member with all rights and responsibilities. The Shahada is also the last thing whispered into the ears of a newborn and the last thing Muslims hope to utter before death. It is the phrase that will be called out on the Day of Judgment for the believers to enter Paradise. The Shahada thus spans a Muslim's entire life, from birth to death and beyond,as the constant reminder of their purpose: to know, love, and serve Allah as taught by His final Prophet.
