Yawm Al-Ilm

يوم العلم
Text Size:
Yawm al-Ilm (Knowledge Day) is an observance celebrating the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge in Muslim communities, reflecting the profound emphasis Islam places on education and learning. The very first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) began with the command "Iqra" (Read!) (96:1), establishing knowledge as foundational to Islamic civilization. The Quran repeatedly elevates the status of those who possess knowledge: "Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees" (58:11). Yawm al-Ilm is observed through educational programs, lectures, book fairs, recognition of scholars and teachers, and encouragement of students. It honors the rich intellectual heritage of Islamic civilization, which preserved and advanced knowledge across multiple disciplines including medicine, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, and theology when Europe was in its Dark Ages. Figures like Ibn Sina, Al-Khwarizmi, and Ibn Rushd exemplify this tradition. The Prophet (peace be upon him) declared: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" (Ibn Majah). Yawm al-Ilm reinforces that education is both a religious duty and a path to understanding Allah's creation, serving humanity, and building just and prosperous societies. The pursuit of knowledge in Islam encompasses both religious and worldly sciences. The Prophet said: "Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise" (Muslim). This includes all beneficial knowledge. The scholars (ulama) are described as the "heirs of the prophets" (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi), indicating the sacred nature of knowledge. Islamic civilization produced some of the world's greatest scholars. Al-Khwarizmi developed algebra, a word derived from his book "Al-Jabr." Ibn Sina's "Canon of Medicine" was the standard medical text in Europe for centuries. Ibn al-Haytham made foundational contributions to optics. Al-Biruni measured the earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy. These scholars were motivated by the Quranic command to reflect on creation and to seek knowledge. Yawm al-Ilm also celebrates teachers and educators. The Prophet said: "The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it" (Bukhari). Teachers are the inheritors of the prophets, transmitting knowledge to future generations. They are honored for their dedication and patience. For believers, Yawm al-Ilm is a call to seek knowledge throughout their lives. They study the Quran and Sunnah, seeking to understand their faith. They pursue beneficial worldly knowledge, seeking to contribute to society. They support education, valuing teachers and schools. They share knowledge, teaching others and spreading benefit. The ultimate knowledge is the knowledge of Allah (ma'rifah). The believer seeks to know Allah through His names, attributes, and signs in creation. This knowledge leads to love, fear, and hope, and transforms the believer's life. The Prophet said: "The one who knows Allah the best is the one who fears Him the most" (Bukhari). Yawm al-Ilm reminds believers that knowledge is a light that guides them through the darkness of ignorance. It is a path to Paradise, a means of serving humanity, and a way to draw closer to Allah. The believer strives to be among those who know and act upon their knowledge, seeking the highest station in this life and the next.
