Zakat al-Fitr

زكاة الفطر
Text Size:
Zakat al-Fitr (also called Sadaqat al-Fitr) is a mandatory form of charity given at the conclusion of Ramadan, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is incumbent upon every Muslim who possesses more than their basic needs for themselves and their dependents, with the head of household typically paying on behalf of family members. The amount is approximately 2.5-3 kg (or its monetary equivalent) of staple food common in the region-such as dates, barley, wheat, or rice-per person. The primary purposes are twofold: to purify any shortcomings or indecencies committed during the Ramadan fast and to ensure that the poor and needy can join in the Eid celebration with dignity and joy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prescribed it, saying: "The fast remains suspended between heaven and earth until the Zakat al-Fitr is given" (Ibn Majah). He also ordained it "as purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and as food for the needy" (Abu Dawud). The obligation must be fulfilled before the Eid prayer for maximum acceptance, though it may be given a day or two earlier. Zakat al-Fitr embodies Islamic values of social solidarity, ensuring that the joy of Eid reaches all members of the community.
