The Islamic Golden Age End Factors is a complex historical question with no single, simple answer. This period of extraordinary scientific, cultural, and economic flourishing, which peaked around the 9th to 13th centuries, eventually gave way to a period of relative intellectual and political decline. Historians point to a confluence of internal and external factors. Externally, the devastating Mongol invasions of the 13th century, culminating in the sack of Baghdad in 1258, destroyed the intellectual heart of the Islamic world, annihilating libraries and centers of learning like the House of Wisdom. The Crusades also drained resources and diverted energy. Internally, the fragmentation of the Abbasid Caliphate into smaller, competing states led to political instability. The rise of more conservative theological interpretations that sometimes viewed philosophy and "foreign sciences" with suspicion may have discouraged free inquiry. The shift of trade routes away from the Islamic heartlands towards the Atlantic coast of Europe after the Age of Discovery also had a profound economic impact. However, it is also important to note that Islamic scholarship and culture continued to thrive in other regions, such as Mamluk Egypt, Timurid Central Asia, and Mughal India, long after the "Golden Age" in Baghdad had ended. The reasons for this shift are a subject of ongoing scholarly debate.
