Imam al-Shawkani (1759–1834 CE) was a brilliant Yemeni scholar and jurist who advocated for "Ijtihad" (independent reasoning) and rejected the rigid "Taqlid" (blind following) of a single Madhhab. His most famous work, Nayl al-Awtar, is a comprehensive commentary on Hadith-based legal rulings. He was unique in his ability to draw from both Sunni and Zaydi Shiite sources, striving for a unified understanding of the Sunnah. His call for a return to the primary texts influenced many subsequent reform movements, emphasizing that every scholar has the duty to seek the truth from the original sources. Imam al-Shawkani was born in Yemen in 1173 AH (1759 CE). He was a scholar of Hadith, fiqh, and tafsir. He was a mujtahid, capable of deriving rulings directly from the Quran and Sunnah. He rejected blind following (taqlid) of a single madhhab, arguing that scholars should follow the strongest evidence, regardless of which school it comes from. His Nayl al-Awtar is a commentary on Hadith related to fiqh, covering the evidence for rulings across schools. He was influenced by both Sunni and Zaydi (Shia) traditions, seeking unity in following the Sunnah. He served as chief judge in Yemen and wrote extensively. He died in 1250 AH (1834 CE). For believers, Imam al-Shawkani is a model of ijtihad and the pursuit of truth. He shows that following the evidence is essential, even if it means leaving a madhhab. The believer learns from him to seek knowledge, to prioritize the Quran and Sunnah, and to follow the strongest evidence.
