A Masjid (Mosque) literally means "A place of prostration (Sujud)". It is the primary place of worship and community gathering for Muslims. While a Muslim can pray anywhere on earth, the Masjid is the "House of Allah" where the five daily prayers are offered in congregation. Beyond prayer, the Masjid historically served as a school, a court, and a community center. Every Masjid contains a "Mihrab" (indicating the Qibla) and a "Minbar" (the pulpit for the sermon). The first mosque in Islam was established by the Prophet Muhammad in Medina upon his migration (Hijrah), serving as a model for all subsequent mosques. Mosques are not considered sacred in themselves but are dedicated spaces for worship where worldly transactions and distractions are avoided. They serve as centers of Islamic education, hosting Quran classes, lectures, and study circles. During Ramadan, mosques come alive with Taraweeh prayers and communal iftars. The Friday Jumu'ah prayer is performed in congregation at the mosque, accompanied by a sermon (Khutbah). Mosques also function as community hubs for weddings, funerals, and charitable activities. The architectural diversity of mosques,from the domes and minarets of the Middle East to the wooden structures of Southeast Asia,reflects the global nature of Islam. Maintaining and attending mosques is highly encouraged, with the Prophet promising shade on the Day of Judgment to those whose hearts are attached to mosques.
