Nur

نور
Text Size:
Nur means "Light." Allah describes Himself as the "Light of the heavens and the earth" (24:35). In a spiritual sense, Nur is the guidance that Allah places in the heart of a believer, allowing them to distinguish between truth and falsehood. The Prophet Muhammad is described as an "illuminating lamp" (sirajan munira) (33:45-46). His message and example illuminate the path to Allah.

Allah describes His light in the Ayat an-Nur: "Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills" (24:35). This light illuminates the heart of the believer. In the Hereafter, believers will have nur (light) that guides them to Paradise. The Quran describes: "their light running before them and on their right hand" (57:12). The intensity of this light corresponds to the strength of faith and deeds in this world.

Nur is also the light of faith (iman) that enters the heart. When Allah opens the heart to Islam, it is as if it is illuminated. The Quran says: "So is one whose breast Allah has expanded to [accept] Islam and he is upon a light from his Lord...?" (39:22). This light enables the believer to distinguish truth from falsehood. The opposite of nur is darkness (zulumat), representing disbelief and sin.

In daily life, the believer seeks to increase their nur through reciting Quran, acts of worship, seeking knowledge, and purifying the soul. Each act of obedience adds light to the heart. The concept of nur teaches that guidance is a gift from Allah. In a world of confusion, the believer is a bearer of light, illuminating the path for themselves and others, until the ultimate light of Paradise, where there is no darkness.
