Salat Al-Janazah

صلاة الجنازة
Text Size:
Salat al-Janazah is the "Funeral Prayer" offered for a deceased Muslim. It is a communal obligation (Fard Kifaya) and is unique because it has no bowing (Ruku) or prostration (Sujud). The prayer consists of four "Takbirs," during which the worshipers recite Al-Fatiha, send blessings on the Prophet, and make intense Dua for the deceased's forgiveness and peace in the grave. It is a final act of brotherhood and a reminder of the fleeting nature of this life. The funeral prayer is performed standing in rows facing the Qibla, with the deceased placed before them. The first takbir is followed by recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah (silently). The second takbir is followed by sending blessings (salawat) upon the Prophet. The third takbir is followed by du'a for the deceased. The fourth takbir is followed by another du'a, then taslim (saying salam to the right). The Prophet taught various du'as for the deceased, including: "Allahumma ghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina" (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead). The prayer is performed even if the deceased was not known to the worshippers,it is a collective responsibility of the community. Participation in the funeral prayer carries immense reward. The Prophet said that whoever attends the funeral until the prayer is completed has one qirat of reward, and whoever stays until burial has two qirats, each equivalent to Mount Uhud (Bukhari, Muslim). The funeral prayer also comforts the family, showing that the community shares in their loss. It reminds the living of their own mortality and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter. The prayer reflects Islamic beliefs about death,it is not an end but a transition, and the community remains connected to the deceased through prayer. The simplicity of the prayer (no bowing or prostration) emphasizes the solemnity of the occasion and the focus on supplication for the departed soul. Salat al-Janazah is one of the few rituals that brings the entire community together regardless of differences, united in seeking Allah's mercy for the departed.
