Umm Kulthum Bint Muhammad

أم كلثوم بنت محمد
Text Size:
Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad (d. 630 CE) was the third daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his wife Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA). She was initially married to Utaybah ibn Abi Lahab, but the marriage was dissolved when her husband's family demanded her divorce. After the death of her sister Ruqayyah, she married Uthman ibn Affan (RA) and was known to be his wife during the compilation of the Quran. She died shortly before the Farewell Pilgrimage. Umm Kulthum represents the peak of prophetic daughterhood and the Nur (light) of a faith that provides for the dignity and protection of women. Her life serves as a definitive Hujjah (proof) of the strength and honor of the women in the prophetic household for the pleasure of their Lord.

Theologically, the life of Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad is a manifestation of the principle of Divine Protection and the Hikmah (wisdom) of Divine law in the organization of the Ummah. It reflects the Nur of a faith that views the honor of the Prophet's family as a primary means of establishing the dignity of women. Her marriage to Uthman (RA) after the dissolution of her previous marriage serves as a Burhan (proof) of the intellectual and moral vitality of the Islamic tradition, which ensures the honor of women. This history reflects the Mizan (balance) between the trials of the pre-Islamic era and the honor bestowed by Islam. Historically, the memory of Umm Kulthum has provided the Ummah with the moral resilience and the social stability needed to honor the women of the Prophet's family. It underscores the absolute duty of every believer to honor and protect the dignity of women and to be a witness to humanity through the power of integrity and radiant achievement.

For the modern Ummah, the legacy of Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad is a source of inspiration and a roadmap for navigating the challenges of honor and dignity. It teaches the believers the value of patience, the beauty of unshakeable faith, and the importance of maintaining an ethical and honest relationship with the principles of Islam. In a modern world often characterized by the erosion of women's dignity, the tradition of the "Prophet's Daughter" provides a roadmap for the pursuit of social justice and the protection of human honor. It encourages a culture of Ihsan (excellence) and communal responsibility.
