Surah Ya-Sin

سورة يس
Text Size:
Surah Ya-Sin is the 36th chapter of the Holy Quran, consisting of 83 verses revealed in Mecca. It is traditionally known as the "Heart of the Quran" because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Ya-Sin. Whoever recites it, Allah writes for him the reward of reciting the Quran ten times" (Tirmidhi, Darimi). The surah opens with the mysterious letters Ya and Sin, followed by an oath by the Wise Quran affirming the Prophet's messengership. Its themes center on three core messages: affirming tawhid (divine unity), confirming prophethood, and establishing resurrection and judgment. It presents parables-the story of the city whose inhabitants rejected messengers, the believer who urged following them and entered Paradise, and the signs of Allah in creation. It describes Allah's power in reviving dead earth, creating pairs in all things, and the sun and moon's precise orbits. The surah powerfully depicts resurrection: "Does man not consider that We created him from a sperm-drop-yet he is a clear adversary? And he makes for Us an example and forgets his own creation. He says, 'Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?' Say, 'He will give them life who produced them the first time'" (36:77-79). Muslims traditionally recite Ya-Sin for the dying and deceased, seeking Allah's mercy and ease in the grave. Its regular recitation brings immense spiritual reward, strengthens faith in resurrection, and reminds believers of life's purpose and ultimate accountability.
