Yawm Al-Muqawamah

Yawm al-Muqawamah (Resistance Day) is observed in various Muslim contexts, particularly in Iran and among groups supporting resistance against perceived oppression and foreign domination. The term "muqawamah" (resistance) encompasses opposition to occupation, imperialism, and injustice through various means,political, cultural, economic, and sometimes military. In the Iranian context, Resistance Day may refer to the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution or to general support for resistance movements in Palestine, Lebanon, and elsewhere. The day emphasizes self-reliance, dignity, and the rejection of foreign domination, drawing on Quranic principles of standing against oppression (zulm) and defending the oppressed (mustad'afun). The Quran commands: "And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children?" (4:75). Yawm al-Muqawamah promotes the idea that resistance is not merely physical but encompasses cultural authenticity, economic independence, and intellectual decolonization. It encourages Muslims to resist assimilation, preserve their identity, and support those struggling for justice worldwide. The day's observance varies significantly across different political and religious contexts, reflecting diverse understandings of what constitutes legitimate resistance and which causes deserve support. Ultimately, Yawm al-Muqawamah represents the conviction that justice requires active struggle, not passive acceptance. The concept of resistance in Islam is rooted in the Quran and the example of the Prophet. The early Muslims resisted persecution in Mecca, eventually migrating to Medina to establish a just society. They resisted oppression from the Quraysh, defending themselves and their faith. The Quran commands believers to resist tyranny and to stand for justice, even when it is difficult. However, Islamic resistance has ethical limits. The Prophet instructed his armies not to kill women, children, the elderly, or monks; not to destroy crops or trees; not to harm places of worship. He taught that resistance must be proportionate and must not target civilians. The Quran commands: "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors" (2:190). Yawm al-Muqawamah also emphasizes cultural resistance,preserving Islamic identity, language, and values in the face of cultural imperialism. The believer resists assimilation, maintains their identity, and passes on Islamic values to the next generation. Economic resistance involves supporting local economies, avoiding exploitation, and creating alternative systems that align with Islamic principles. Intellectual resistance involves seeking knowledge, refuting false ideologies, and presenting Islam as a comprehensive alternative. For believers, Yawm al-Muqawamah is a reminder that faith requires active commitment. They resist oppression, defend the vulnerable, and work for justice. They resist cultural assimilation, preserving their identity and values. They resist economic exploitation, conducting their affairs with integrity. They resist intellectual subjugation, seeking knowledge and speaking truth. The ultimate resistance is against the ego (nafs) and the whispers of Shaytan. The Prophet called the struggle against the self the "greater jihad." The believer resists their own desires, purifies their soul, and strives to align their will with Allah's will. Yawm al-Muqawamah reminds believers that resistance is not only external but internal, and that the greatest victory is over one's own lower self. The believer lives in resistance,resisting injustice, resisting oppression, resisting the erosion of faith, and resisting the pull of the ego. They trust that ultimate victory belongs to those who are patient and who trust in Allah.
