Yawm Al-Shajarah

يوم الشجرة
Text Size:
Yawm al-Shajarah (Tree Day) is observed in various Muslim communities to promote tree planting, forest conservation, and appreciation of trees' environmental and spiritual significance. The date often aligns with Arbor Day celebrations in different countries or local environmental initiatives. Islam holds trees in special regard, using them as Quranic symbols and encouraging their planting and protection. The Quran describes the date palm as a blessed tree and uses the metaphor of a good tree for the word of faith: "Do you not see how Allah presents a parable: a good word is like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and whose branches reach to heaven, yielding its fruit every season by permission of its Lord" (14:24-25). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) actively encouraged tree planting, stating: "If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (sadaqah) for him" (Bukhari and Muslim). He also prohibited cutting trees unnecessarily, especially during warfare. Yawm al-Shajarah promotes tree planting campaigns, educational programs about trees' environmental benefits, and conservation efforts protecting forests and green spaces. It addresses challenges like deforestation, urbanization, and climate change, emphasizing trees' role in providing oxygen, preventing erosion, supporting biodiversity, and beautifying communities. The day reminds Muslims that planting trees is both environmental responsibility and spiritual investment-an act of sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity) benefiting generations.
