Ayat al-Kursi, often known as the "Verse of the Throne," is the 255th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah and is widely considered the most powerful verse in the Quran. It provides a magnificent description of Allah's absolute sovereignty, knowledge, and self-subsistence. It states that His "Kursi" (Throne or Power) extends over the heavens and the earth, and that He never tires of guarding His creation. Muslims frequently recite this verse for protection, spiritual strength, and as a reminder of God's unmatched greatness, particularly before sleeping or after daily prayers. The verse reads: "Allah, there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great" (2:255). The Prophet (peace be upon him) described Ayat al-Kursi as the greatest verse in the Quran. He said to Ubayy ibn Ka'b: "Do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?" Ubayy replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet repeated the question, and Ubayy said: "Allah, there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining." The Prophet then struck him on the chest and said: "May knowledge delight you, O Abu Mundhir" (Muslim). The verse contains many of Allah's names and attributes: Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living), Al-Qayyum (the Self-Sustaining), Al-Ali (the Most High), Al-Azim (the Most Great). It affirms Allah's oneness, His eternal life, His self-subsistence, His sovereignty, His knowledge, and His power. The "Kursi" (Throne or Footstool) is a creation of Allah, described by the Prophet as being so vast that the seven heavens and the earth are like a ring thrown in a desert compared to it. This illustrates the greatness of Allah's power and authority. The Prophet said that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after each obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death (Nasa'i). He also said that reciting it before sleeping grants protection from Shaytan until morning (Bukhari). For believers, Ayat al-Kursi is recited daily for protection and as a reminder of Allah's greatness. It is recited after prayers, before sleeping, when entering the home, and in times of fear. It is a means of seeking refuge in Allah and affirming one's faith in His absolute power and knowledge. The verse teaches that Allah is Ever-Living and Self-Sustaining, needing nothing from His creation while all depend on Him. It teaches that His knowledge encompasses all things, past, present, and future. It teaches that no one can intercede with Him without His permission. It teaches that His throne extends over all creation, and He preserves it without fatigue. For believers, reciting Ayat al-Kursi is a powerful act of worship that strengthens faith, provides protection, and reminds them of the greatness of their Lord. They recite it with reflection, understanding its meaning, and trusting in the protection it provides. They know that the One who is Ever-Living and Self-Sustaining is sufficient for them, and they place their trust in Him.
