Mizan

ميزان
Text Size:
The Mizan (The Scale) is the "Balance" that will be set up on the Day of Judgment to weigh the deeds of human beings. The Quran says, "Then those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] will be successful" (23:102). The Mizan is perfectly just; not even the weight of an atom's worth of good or evil will be overlooked. It encourages the believer to focus on "quality" in their worship and "integrity" in their character. The Mizan is a literal balance that will be used on the Day of Judgment to weigh deeds. The Quran describes it in several places: "And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be wronged at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant" (21:47). The good deeds will be weighed against the bad deeds. Those whose good deeds outweigh the bad will enter Paradise. Those whose bad deeds outweigh the good will enter the Fire, unless Allah forgives them. The Mizan is perfectly just. No deed, no matter how small, is overlooked. The Quran emphasizes that even an atom's weight of good or evil will be accounted for (99:7-8). The Mizan encourages believers to focus on quality. Not all deeds are equal. Sincere deeds, deeds done for Allah alone, and deeds that benefit others carry more weight. The Mizan also emphasizes integrity. Deeds done for show or with bad intentions will not weigh heavily. The Prophet said that on the Day of Judgment, some people will come with mountains of deeds, but they will be scattered like dust because they were not done for Allah. The Mizan also includes the weighing of intentions and the consequences of deeds. A small deed that leads to great good may carry great weight. A large deed done with bad intention may carry little weight. Belief in the Mizan shapes how believers live. It encourages them to be mindful of their actions, to seek sincerity, and to focus on what truly matters. It gives hope that no good deed is wasted and warns that no evil deed is overlooked. The Mizan is a reminder of divine justice. It assures the oppressed that their suffering will be accounted for, and it warns the oppressor that they cannot escape accountability. It calls believers to live with integrity, to do good sincerely, and to trust that Allah's justice will prevail.
