Surah Al-Mulk

سورة الملك
Text Size:
Surah Al-Mulk (The Sovereignty) is the 67th chapter of the Holy Quran, consisting of 30 verses revealed in Mecca. Its opening verse declares: "Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion (al-mulk), and He is over all things competent" (67:1), establishing Allah's absolute sovereignty over all creation. The surah's central themes are divine power, the perfection of creation, and the reality of resurrection and judgment. It calls humanity to reflect on the universe as evidence of Allah's mastery: "And He created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return your vision to the sky; do you see any breaks?" (67:3). The surah warns those who disbelieve of Hell's punishment, describing its inhabitants' regrets and confessions. It offers comfort to believers, assuring that Allah knows all secrets and that trust in Him brings security. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized Surah Al-Mulk's special protection, stating: "There is a surah in the Quran of thirty verses which intercedes for its companion until he is forgiven: 'Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion'" (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah). He also said it prevents the torment of the grave. Consequently, Muslims traditionally recite Surah Al-Mulk nightly before sleep, seeking Allah's protection and mercy. The surah cultivates awareness of Allah's sovereignty, gratitude for creation's perfection, and preparation for the meeting with the Creator.
