Yawm al-Arabiyyah (Arabic Language Day) is observed annually on December 18th, coinciding with World Arabic Language Day established by UNESCO in 2012. This day celebrates Arabic as one of humanity's major languages, spoken by over 400 million people and used by nearly two billion Muslims in worship. Arabic holds unique status in Islam as the language of the Quran, which Allah revealed "in a clear Arabic tongue" (16:103). The Quran's linguistic inimitability (I'jaz) challenged the masters of Arabic poetry and remains a fundamental proof of its divine origin. Classical Arabic preserved Islamic sciences, transmitted prophetic traditions, and enabled scholarly communication across the vast Islamic world from Spain to China. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Love the Arabs for three reasons: because I am an Arab, the Quran is Arabic, and the speech of the people of Paradise is Arabic" (Tabarani). Arabic calligraphy developed into one of Islam's highest visual arts, adorning mosques and manuscripts. Yawm al-Arabiyyah celebrates the language's rich literary heritage, its role in preserving Islamic civilization, and its continuing vitality. Educational institutions organize poetry readings, calligraphy exhibitions, and programs highlighting Arabic's contribution to science, philosophy, and world culture. The day reminds Arabic speakers and learners of their linguistic heritage and responsibility to preserve and develop it.
