Qarn Al-Shaytan

قرن الشيطان
Text Size:
Qarn al-Shaytan (the Horn of Satan) is a term appearing in authentic Hadith, referring to a direction from which the sun rises that is associated with the emergence of great trials (fitan) and religious deviations. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The Horn of Satan will emerge from the direction of the sunrise" (Muslim). This statement has been interpreted in multiple ways by scholars. Some understand it geographically, referring to the East as the source of various religious innovations, philosophical movements, or political powers that would challenge Islamic orthodoxy throughout history. Others interpret it metaphorically, suggesting that major tribulations and deviations from true faith would originate from eastern regions. The term "horn" (qarn) may symbolize strength, prominence, or the place from which attacks emerge. Historically, scholars noted that many influential movements-both religious and political-arose from eastern lands: various philosophical schools, theological innovations, and later the Mongol invasions. The Hadith serves as a warning for Muslims to remain vigilant about preserving authentic faith against external influences, while not implying inherent evil in Eastern peoples or lands. It emphasizes the importance of grounding faith in authentic sources and scholarly tradition rather than being swayed by every new ideology. The statement ultimately directs believers to strengthen their connection to prophetic guidance regardless of geographical or cultural pressures.
