Text Size:
Yawm al-Ard (Land Day) is an annual day of commemoration observed by Palestinians on March 30th, marking a pivotal moment in the struggle for land rights and identity. The day originated in 1976 when Israeli authorities announced a plan to expropriate thousands of dunams of Arab-owned land in the Galilee for "security and settlement purposes," triggering widespread protests, strikes, and confrontations in which six unarmed Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed by security forces. Land Day has since become a symbol of Palestinian resistance and connection to their land, observed by Palestinians everywhere through marches, rallies, cultural events, and educational programs. While Land Day is a political and national commemoration rather than a religious observance, it resonates deeply with Islamic values of justice, resistance to oppression, and the sanctity of land. The Quran instructs: "And do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors" (2:190). Islamic tradition emphasizes that land and resources are trusts from Allah, not to be unjustly seized. Land Day reminds Muslims of their responsibility to stand against injustice (zulm) and support those whose rights are violated, reflecting the prophetic teaching: "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or is oppressed" (Bukhari). It represents the intersection of faith, identity, and the universal human connection to homeland.
