Yawm Al-Khulud

يوم الخلود
Text Size:
Yawm al-Khulud (the Day of Eternity) emphasizes that after judgment, the final destinations,Paradise or Hell, will be eternal. The Quran describes the righteous being told: "Enter it with peace. This is the Day of Eternity" (50:34). For the people of Paradise, khulud means everlasting bliss without end. For the people of Hell, it means perpetual punishment, though believing sinners may eventually be removed after purification.

The concept of khulud distinguishes Islamic eschatology from beliefs where existence ends or cycles repeat. This eternity gives significance to worldly choices, as finite actions produce infinite consequences. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes that neither Paradise nor Hell will end. "They will not taste death therein... and He will protect them from the punishment of Hellfire" (44:56). Death itself will be no more.

The permanence of the Hereafter gives meaning to life; a life that leads to eternal consequences gives every moment significance. The believer prioritizes eternal well-being over temporary pleasures. They know that wealth and status are temporary, but faith and good character are eternal. They prioritize eternal gratification over temporary gain. The greatest joy is the eternal pleasure of Allah.

The Quran says: "But the pleasure of Allah is greater. That is the great attainment" (9:72). The greatest joy is the vision of Allah's face. Yawm al-Khulud is the day when this eternal pleasure begins. The believer prepares by seeking Allah's pleasure above all else, investing in the eternal. They live with the awareness that every act contributes to an eternal record, striving to enter with the greeting of peace.
