Yawm Al-Masinn

يوم المسن
Text Size:
Yawm al-Masinn (Elderly Day) is observed in many Muslim-majority countries to honor senior citizens and promote respect, care, and appreciation for the elderly. The date varies-International Day of Older Persons (October 1st) is widely recognized, while some countries have their own observances. Islam commands extraordinary respect for the elderly, particularly parents and grandparents. The Quran instructs: "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be dutiful to your parents. If one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor reprimand them, but address them in terms of honor. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small'" (17:23-24). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our elders" (Tirmidhi). He also taught that honoring the elderly is honoring Allah. Yawm al-Masinn promotes intergenerational connection, appreciation for seniors' wisdom and contributions, and awareness of issues facing the elderly-healthcare, loneliness, financial security, and social isolation. Activities include visiting nursing homes, organizing community gatherings, health screenings, and public recognition of senior citizens. The day reminds Muslims that aging is natural, that the elderly deserve dignity and care, and that youth will one day become old, hoping for similar respect from future generations.
