Al-Fajr (The Dawn) refers to the break of light before sunrise and is the name of the first of the five obligatory daily prayers (Salah). In Islamic tradition, the time of Fajr is a blessed period; the Quran states that "the recitation of Al-Fajr is witnessed" by the angels of both the night and the day. Surah Al-Fajr (Chapter 89) also uses the dawn as an oath by Allah to emphasize the certainty of the Day of Judgment and the historical lessons of civilizations that transgressed. For a Muslim, waking for Fajr represents the ultimate daily victory over the ego (nafs) and Shaitan. It sets the spiritual tone for the entire day, signifying a commitment to putting the worship of the Creator before the comforts of the world.
