Yawm Al-Mubahalah

يوم المباهلة

Yawm al-Mubahalah (the Day of Imprecation) commemorates a significant event in 10 AH (631 CE) when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) challenged a Christian delegation from Najran to engage in mutual invocation of Allah's curse on whichever party was false. The Najran Christians, led by their bishop, had debated with the Prophet about the nature of Jesus (peace be upon him), insisting on his divinity while Muslims affirmed his prophethood. When arguments concluded, Allah revealed: "Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you-say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars'" (3:61). The Prophet appeared for mubahalah with his daughter Fatimah, son-in-law Ali, and grandsons Hasan and Husayn (RA). Witnessing their sincerity and closeness, the Christians declined the challenge, instead agreeing to a peace treaty and paying jizyah. This event demonstrates Islam's confidence in its truth, the importance of rational debate followed by willingness to accept divine judgment, and the elevated status of the Ahl al-Bayt (Prophet's family). Yawm al-Mubahalah is commemorated by Muslims, particularly Shia, on the 24th of Dhu al-Hijjah as a testament to truth's triumph and the Prophet's family's central role.
