Surah Al-Fatiha

سورة الفاتحة
Text Size:
Surah Al-Fatihah (The Opening) is the first chapter of the Holy Quran, consisting of seven verses revealed in Mecca. It holds unparalleled significance in Islamic worship-every unit (rak'ah) of the five daily prayers requires its recitation, making it the most frequently recited chapter globally. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) declared: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book" (Bukhari and Muslim). Known as "Umm al-Kitab" (Mother of the Book) and "al-Sab' al-Mathani" (the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses), it encapsulates the Quran's entire message. The surah begins with praise of Allah as Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful, Master of Judgment Day. It then presents the essence of worship-we worship only You and seek only Your help. It concludes with the central supplication: guide us to the straight path, the path of those blessed, not those who earned anger or went astray. This structure transforms the surah from recitation into intimate conversation between servant and Creator. Scholars note its comprehensive nature-it contains praise, acknowledgment of divine attributes, declaration of worship, request for guidance, and distinction between truth and falsehood. Surah Al-Fatihah is also a healing (ruqyah) for spiritual and physical ailments. Its daily repetition anchors Muslims in gratitude, humility, and continuous seeking of divine guidance.
